A proposal to put most beautiful beaches in the country back in public hands has been presented to the Government.

New Chums beach in the Coromandel is privately-owned, but that could change if the Government signs off on the deal.

Its blue water, golden sand and pohutukawa trees have been praised by the likes of Lonely Planet and National Geographic, but another huge feature of New Chums beach is that it's virtually untouched.

And when owner and developer John Darby proposed to build 20 houses around New Chums and neighbouring whangapoua, the local council received around 1000 submissions opposing it which includes many overseas submissions all in favour of it remaining untouched by commercial development.

With all the submissions opposing it this It is highly unlikely that this developer wanting to make a quick buck and visually destroying one of the most visually beautiful and pristine beaches in the world will get his way This is one of those times when all the rules and regulations of bureaucracy act in the favour of all new Zealanders and visitors in protecting our natural heritage.
